A teacher of direct perception
Ilana Grostern founded The TinyWorld Institute to give a coherent public home to a body of work developed through prolonged direct observation of biological signalling, attention, household systems, relationships, male and female design, sovereignty, and stewardship.
Her teaching identity is independent of a particular role or audience. She teaches by making structures intelligible and by allowing the operating principles of the work to become visible in the way a life is stewarded.
The Institute emerged from the recognition that many human problems become harder to perceive when interpretation arrives before observation. Its central discipline is therefore simple and demanding: see the thing itself, preserve distinctions, and let the full structure of the event become available.
Channel and authorship
The insights often arrive as structures before they arrive as finished language.
Ilana describes her process as channeling. A concept may first appear as a spatial relationship, a mechanism, a sequence, a visual model, or a pattern in the mindscape. She then transmits it through speech, writing, drawing, or interaction with technology.
AI serves as an external memory, organizer, pattern-recognition system, translator, and production collaborator. It helps shape material into essays, graphics, curricula, and digital structures. Ilana retains authorship, conceptual judgment, and responsibility for the work.
This division of responsibility allows human perception and computational synthesis to remain distinct while working in complementary relationship.
Behind the Work
Doran Smith
The TinyWorld Institute was founded through Ilana’s teaching and body of work, but it did not emerge in isolation. Behind the Institute is a marriage, a household, and a shared life in which many of its principles have been lived before they were articulated.
Doran is the man behind much of that supporting structure. His contribution is not authorship of the teachings, but stewardship of the conditions that allow the work to unfold. Through practical support, protection of space, and the ordinary architecture of shared life, he helps create the territory from which Ilana is able to perceive, teach, and build.
Their marriage is also one of the living places in which the Institute’s inquiry into male and female avatars, right relationship, reception, responsibility, serenity, and peace continues to develop.
The body of work stands on its own.
